The Right Way of Organizing Home Paperwork   by Zoul Pio

To maintain a home office requires much effort especially in organizing home paperwork. Time and time again you would sadly find yourself in the midst of a clutter if you do not work with a system. And many times you would surely be wasting precious time in looking for one particular document to no avail. But if you have a system that works, there won’t be no waste of time and you can go about with your business.

Perhaps the most dominant “stash” you will have in your home office is the paperwork and organizing this could be quite a burden especially for those who have not started with a system yet. But for those who already have a system yet still find themselves having trouble sorting and filing, perhaps the system you are using is no longer effective. This requires change. The major activities involved in organizing home paperwork are the following tasks: gathering, sorting out, storing, and purging. Find time to do the essential elements in organizing. Foremost of all, gather all of the loose paperwork – those without a particular “home”, those that are displaced and are scattered all over tables, chairs and the floor. Stacking can be a good help in the sorting part. Sort out paperwork and label them per heap for now if you haven’t found a designated place for them yet. Labeling per pile would prevent mix-ups and starting from scratch.

Once you have already sorted through your paperwork, be sure to hold on to those important documents and all other unnecessary papers may be purged or rid of. However before you get into this part, be sure to consult your accountant or financial advisor regarding guidelines of retention and such. Particular guidelines are put up by the state or required in your particular case as regards how many times you are allowed to shred or dispose of certain documents. You need to scrutinize when organizing home paperwork. It’s not as easy as keeping what you desire and discarding what you don’t or what you think is waste without due consideration. As regards very important documents, you can be sure of its safety by keeping it inside a safe deposit box in a bank. Or maybe you could find a secured location in your home and install a fire resistant box to keep your documents safe.

And who says this can’t be something fun to do as well? Binders and folders can help you when you have your paperwork sorted. This would not only ease your mind because of the orderliness but would at the same time visually please you and add to the enhancement of your home office. Make organizing home paperwork a sure step towards the attainment of that properly kept home office!
