Fort Myers Legacy dealers excited about new boxer engine from Subaru   by Willard Bullock

Plain and simple, Subaru has always been a preferred brand for me. They aren’t the big guys. Their cars combine a load of different performance features with unique designs. You aren’t driving just another sedan when you roll around in a Subaru. And to top it off, I find them to be an environmentally and socially responsible company.

That said, Subaru autos have never run at optimal fuel efficiency due to their constant four-wheel drive system. Of course, this four-wheel drive system places Subaru vehicles far beyond competitor models when it comes to safety. Now, a new boxer engine planned for the line promised to increase fuel efficiency about 10 percent.

The new engine will be introduced by the end of the year, according to a spokesperson for Subaru’s parent company, Fuji Heavy. So far, there are no official specifications on the new engine. However, it is suspected that the new engine will be a four-cylinder boxer between 2.0-2.5 liters. The idea behind this engine seems to be primarily focused on improving fuel economy by using a constant variable transmission.

It sounds like the new engine will be based on or similar to the one shown at the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show on the Subaru Hybrid Tourer Concept. That one used a 2.0-lieter boxer direct injection with a turbocharger.

Subaru has never produced what you would call gas guzzlers, but it’s true that compared to similar vehicles, they are less fuel-efficient thanks to the safety of constant four-wheel drive. Although you can argue Subaru’s engine overhaul is past due, the focus to upgrade now should propel its line of vehicles into very respectable gas mileage numbers.

The key to Subaru’s new engine will be keeping the same impressive performance that keeps a dedicated set of driving enthusiasts and tuners coming back to the brand. Unlike some of the bigger boys, Subaru doesn’t just make cars, they make extensions of self, vehicles that mean something to the people who drive them. And it sounds like the new boxer will only enhance the overall experience.
